The term ‘further education’ sector describes post-compulsory learning provision of all kinds in England. It refers to general further education (FE) colleges, tertiary colleges, sixth form colleges and independent specialist colleges. It also includes work-based learning (also referred to as publically funded independent learning providers), employer or union based learning, prison education and many parts of adult and community learning (also referrred to as local adult learning providers). In this website the term ‘learning provider’ is used as a generic term for all organisations.

Who will implement the Workforce Development Strategy?
Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) is the national sector skills council that defines and oversees the Strategy. Managers at any level in the further education sector, however many staff they are responsible for, will implement the Strategy in their own organisation.
